Hitler's Rise to Power

The last German election in which more than one party could participate took place on March 5, 1933. In all following elections, only Hitler's NSDAP appeared on the ballot. Here are some books and movies about those crucial years in the late 1920s and early 1930s when Hitler's takeover and suppression of all resistance became irreversible. We include some books and movies about the "Anschluss" as well, when Germany took over Austria in 1938 and Austria ceased to exist as an independent state. This annotated list includes both non-fiction (including memoirs) as well as fiction, since often it is fiction that really penetrates to the core of how actual people experienced their loss of freedom and the increasing victimization of their neighbors--and then they themselves.
