Honoring Filipino Heritage

In honor of Filipino American Heritage Month, visit the Philippines with us by checking out these books. Learn the origins of the proudly waving red, white, blue and sunny flag honoring Filipino independence. Find out how many of the 7,000 islands that make up the Philippeans people call home! Taste the comfort found in a bowl of smooth, chicken and rice lugaw, or the cold, refreshing ice-y treat of the ube, fruit-forward halo-halo. Take in the view of lush, rain forests, rice terraces, volcano-dotted trails, harbor shorefronts and serene lagoons. Hear the dampened "Whishhhh," of falling water on the traditional countryside Nipa hut's thatched roof during the wet season or the sounds of traffic in busy Manila. Read stories that exemplify the strong, Filipino community spirit of bayanihan. Perhaps it's time to take a page from the Philippine practice of slowing down for a break in the heat of the hapon (afternoon).
