The Intersection of Spirituality and Mental Well-being in Black Communities of Faith

Description

Overview:

Mental health plays an essential role in a person’s overall well-being, yet discussions about trauma and mental health are often uncommon in faith communities; especially those in Black communities. Depending only on spiritual practices such as prayer may contribute to ongoing stigma. Many faith leaders do not feel adequately equipped to assist those experiencing these issues.

Promoting open dialogue about mental health within these groups can foster the development of coping strategies and greater resilience.

Presentation Objectives

1. Gain insight into how misconceptions about faith and mental health within

black households and communities can affect faith believers access to mental health care.

2. Examine how religious and spiritual practices promote coping skills, resilience, and enhanced mental health.

3. Identify opportunities to encourage open discussions about mental health and emotional well-being among faith leaders and members of the Black Community.

4. Discover ways to foster emotional and psychological health within faith communities by focusing on prevention, treatment, and recovery strategies.
